Today I am reviewing the Sandberg StreamBoard, which is a remote control sized keyboard with mouse trackpad that can be used as the perfect companion for a smart T.V box setup. I have been using it with my Android powered T.V box.

Product specifications:(Taken From Sandberg’s website)

  • Rechargeable polymer Lithium-ion battery

The design of the StreamBoard is, in my opinion, pure genius. In terms of its shape, it very much looks like a standard remote control, with the buttons flipped to be used in a horizontal position instead of a vertical position. This makes using it with a smart T.V setup even easier as it just feels like it’s meant to be pointed at a T.V set. It’s also very comfortable in use, thanks to how it somehow manages to fit pretty much all four fingers behind, whilst only having your thumbs fully visible at the front.

As I mentioned above they keys are laid out in a horizontal position instead of vertical, this makes more sense as it helps to incorporate each letter of a standard QWERTY keyboard. The trackpad sits in the middle of the keys and although this sounds like it could make thing a little complicated, it surprisingly doesn’t and as I have noticed my thumbs sit comfortably on each section of the keypad. This makes typing so much easier as I am able to start from the side the correct beginning letter is on and find my thumbs just naturally moving to their required letter on either the right or left side of the StreamBoard. As for the space bar, well there’s two, one on each side, that means you can access it easily no matter what side you are currently. I’m also able to comfortably move my thumbs over to the trackpad with little effort and ease.

Along the bottom edge of the StreamBoard is a MicroUSB port for charging the built-in battery and a power switch for turning the StreamBoard on and off. Around the back at the left-hand side is a cover that is removed to reveal the nano receiver that you simply plug into any available USB port on your smart T.V or PC setup.

All the standard keys are on this as well as some media hotkeys that are integrated into the F keys. The left and right clicks are taken care of by two buttons located on the right-hand side and you can also use the left and right section of the touchpad if you desire. Also present is a standby power button, which to my surprise actually worked with my Android T.V box, I don’t know why, but I just didn’t expect it to work for some reason.

Setup is rather easy and requires you to only plug the USB receiver into your device and turn the StreamBoard on. This is thanks to the Plug and Play capabilities found in most operating systems today. Some devices, however, may require a bit of time to find and install the drivers required for the StreamBoard, but again this will be done automatically by the operating system.

In use:

I have been using the StreamBoard as an all in one controller for my Android T.V box and have found it to be a great companion and a much better replacement for the horrible remote that came with the box. The trackpad really made navigating the user interface of what is technically a touch screen based o.s so much easier.  I even found the small surface area of the trackpad to be hassle free, even during long periods of use. Then there’s typing, which we all know is much easier on any type of keyboard than a remote with the number/letter keys in one that were used on older mobile phones. As I mentioned in the design part of the review, I find my thumbs have easily adjusted to the keys been split down the middle by a trackpad. it’s just so easy to glide my thumbs across their own section to get to the next key I need in a sequence of letters or numbers to make a word or a number. Each key also presses down with ease and is complete with a nice little feedback click just to inform you, you properly pressed the key down.

A brilliant creation by the clever minds at Sandberg. It combines comfort and practicality into one easy to use package. With all the relevant keys needed to create a full keyboard experience in the palms of your hands along with a trackpad for easy navigating the StreamBoard is a must have for anybody with a smart T.V setup. This is truly a faultless product by Sandberg.
